Description
Piper Shores is Maine’s premier nonprofit Continuing Care Retirement Community, offering Independent Living, Assisted Living and Skilled Care on an expansive oceanfront campus in Scarborough, Maine.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Finance Director is responsible for the financial management of the community and overseeing the day-to-day operations of accounting, accounts payable/receivable and billing. This includes overseeing the accounting, budgeting, and financial planning functions, as well as the management of financial risks and investments.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Serves as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to overall operational strategy and decision-making.
- Serves as a strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Board on all financial matters, providing insights and analytics that inform organizational priorities.
- Leads long-range financial forecasting, capital planning, and scenario modeling to support mission-aligned growth and sustainability.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate level of internal controls consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP)
- Ensures compliance with all bond covenants, and state and federal regulations.
- Coordinates and participates in year-end activities including annual audit, Bureau of Insurance audit, Medicare audits, Workers Compensation audits and any other audits. Ensures all audit schedules are achieved.
- Monitors financial performance of organization and communicates status to Board of Directors, CEO and Leadership Team.
- Prepares annual budget. Tracks and reports to the CEO, peers and the Board of Directors' Finance Committee on variance to budget.
- Reviews financial statements and all necessary input including support schedules, journals, ledgers and financial statements.
- Reviews reconciliation of all bank accounts, subsidiary journals and the general ledger on a monthly basis.
- Reviews endowment amortization, fixed asset and depreciation schedules.
- Works with the investment manager to manage investment funds within the guidelines of the Investment Policy Statement.
- Directs staff in preparation and distribution of payroll checks, maintaining payroll records and assuring that wage and hour regulations regarding reporting of hours and other payroll audit functions are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations.
- Oversees all aspects of insurance programs including general liability, professional liability, directors & officers, property, workers' compensation, and cyber liability.
- Partners with brokers, carriers, and legal advisors to manage claims, mitigate losses, and respond to emerging risks.
- Provides direct supervision to the Controller.
- Oversees the resident financial onboarding process, ensuring families and residents understand agreements, entrance fees, refunds, and ongoing charges.
- Provides individual guidance on long-term care insurance, Medicare/Medicaid, and supplemental coverage as it relates to services.
- Calculates and processes move-outs, deaths and return of advance deposit refunds.
- Serves as staff liaison to Board and Resident Finance Committees meetings with presentations on the statement of operations, balance sheet, cash flow, bond covenants, A/R and other financial documents as requested.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting or other related field with appropriate job experience required. CPA preferred but not required.
- Minimum of 5-7 years experience, three years of which is at the management level, of general accounting functions, including but not limited to G/L, A/P, A/R, and financial statement preparation.
- Experience with developing and overseeing financial strategies that drive long-term sustainable growth.
- Experience in a healthcare or similar setting preferred.
- Demonstrated leader of highest personal and professional integrity who is committed to fulfilling the mission and vision of the organization.
- Excellent communication skills including highly articulate, excellent listener, strong writing and presentation skills, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with wide ranging groups and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to make effective decisions working difficult and complex situations.
- Advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite and billing applications.
